In the sunny island nation of Sri Lanka, it is said that the auspicious “koho-koho “of the Asian Koel bird is the first sign of the oncoming New Year. Commemorated with great pomp and reverence, this annual cultural festival in April is perhaps the most anticipated event in the Sri Lankan cultural landscape, with a century’s old history steeped in religion and astrology. Steeped in Buddhist and Hindu religious beliefs, it is said that the origins of the festival are found in agricultural practices which decreed that an offering of thanks must be enacted after a bountiful harvest at the conclusion of each year. Celebrated with equal fervour by both Tamil and Sinhalese communities, the traditional New Year Festival begins with the white washing, cleaning and polishing of households rich and poor across the vast expanses of this island nation.

Newly bought clothes are also reserved for the occasion while special sweetmeats such as oil cakes and kokis that are only prepared during this auspicious season are also made in plentiful numbers in almost every home. The various timings for performing the rituals of the New Year are decreed by astrologers who appoint special hours for first the lighting of the hearth to prepare “milk rice” and then the time to sit down for the first family meal in the New Year. Other rituals such as engaging in religious activities and engaging in the first commercial transactions for the New Year are also predetermined by astrologers who trace the sun’s movement from the zodiac sign Pieces to Aries. Betel leaves are also exchanged between family members, neighbours and friends as a symbol of good will as gifts are also exchanged between relatives during the season. Renowned as a festival that reinforces filial piety and togetherness, a majority of Sri Lankans head to their ancestral homes in villages for the New Year for a reunion with loved ones during this public holiday.
